“Pledge to the Sun”

Because hardships and the unexpected were so much a part of their life, the belief came to pass among the Plains Indians that personal suffering was involved in the receipt of supernatural power and favor. Suffering and testing were also their forms thanksgiving, since they proved, beyond any doubt, the sincerity of their gratitude to God for His response to their pleas. A simple easily given thank you was not enough for the Indians of the Plains.
